Cria

Cria

Given that the average gestation of an alpaca is nearly a year, but can range from 320 to 370 days, alpaca breeding can bring a lot of surprises. Sometimes, we just open up the barn door in the morning and there is a new face amongst the herd. Other times, we have had to assist in the delivery and provide neonatal support during the first few days. Regardless, the process has been so rewarding, we are continuing our breeding program.

In 2014, we are expecting fall cria from Northcoast Michelangelo’s Miracle (dark fawn), Blushing Diamond (beige) and Sable’s Copper Penny (medium fawn). They were bred to Benchmark’s Peru Aztec by Avatar (dark fawn), El Peruvian Zorro Rojo (dark brown) and Brenton Knoll Yago (medium rose grey), respectively. Obviously, we are attempting to introduce more color into our herd. Check back in September to see how our cria match the fall colors!
