Winter came in like a lion and it looks like this beast is here to stay for a while. Having lived in southern Michigan for over 30 years, this has been much more like a “normal” winter – plenty of cold and plenty of snow. While the vegetation is resting, the farm is still super busy with all things alpaca. We harvested over 100 lbs of alpaca fiber from our herd this year. That fiber has to be prepared for milling by picking out any hay or short cuts from shearing, shaking out excess dirt, etc. Once that is done, the fiber is sorted based on its quality and sent to the mill to make roving, yarn, socks, boot liners, winter wear and more. Any left overs are used for insulation, mulch, and nesting balls for the bird

One mill our farm uses is called the New England Alpaca Fiber Pool (NEAFP) located in Massachusetts. It is a cooperative that gets all its alpaca fiber from farms in the United States. n return the farms have access to some fabulous products, like our best seller “Survival Socks”. I could not survive the winter without these socks!
We use a couple other Michigan mills to make our roving, yarn and felt sheets. These products are made completely from the fiber from our herd. You can see all our alpaca products at our Etsy store. Anything purchased goes directly to supporting our herd.
Remember No Alpaca Farms – No Alpaca Socks!
